As a coach and counselor at Melrose High School, he dedicated his life to working with young people. He served two terms as president of the Massachusetts Guidance Counselors Association and later worked in admissions at Merrimack College. Terry Young was the first coordinator and general manager of AlphaNet after it was founded in 1995. He guided, fostered, and built the culture of the organization, leading it through many years of development and growth. A lung-affected Alpha who was a transplant recipient, Young battled his own health issues while simultaneously embracing the AlphaNet vision and taking responsibility for its day-to-day operations. He oversaw the transition and enrollment of thousands of Alphas into augmentation therapy programs, providing them with health management services. He insisted that each AlphaNet coordinator stay focused on doing what is best for Alphas and guiding them toward the best quality of life possible. He was an example of how one person’s efforts can make a difference in many lives.

James (Jim) Quill was on the Alpha-1 Foundation Board of Directors from 2012-2019. He served as a member and as the vice chair and treasurer. He was a dedicated AlphaNet coordinator for 10 years and retired as the general manager for AlphaNet, in 2018. He was loved and respected by his colleagues and all the Alphas he served. Quill touched the lives of so many and was a cherished friend to all who knew him.
Originally from Levittown, Pennsylvania, Quill spent 35 years giving the gift of education to elementary school students as a classroom teacher, reading specialist and a principal. He was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) in the late 1980s and received a bilateral lung transplant in May 2006. Following his transplant, Quill began his new career as an AlphaNet coordinator and helped people learn more about their health and how to deal with a rare disorder that affected his entire family.
As an educator, Quill enjoyed participating in the Educational Scholarship Committee. He approached each opportunity with great enthusiasm, as he loved helping a young student follow their path.
Two James Quill Memorial Scholarships will be awarded each year, in the amount of $2,500 each.
