FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 23, 2002- The Alphas are headed to the Cape Cod, Massachusetts this weekend for the annual Escape to the Cape Bike Trek after a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic. In its 26th year, Team Alpha-1 is ready for a great weekend of riding for awareness for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1).
Over 100 riders and volunteers are expected to ride for two days on the picturesque coast of Cape Cod, hoping to win the “Silver Spoke” award again this year presented by the American Lung Association (ALA) for the largest team. Team Alpha-1’s commitment to help find a cure remains at an all time high. The community fundraiser has already raised over $100,000 exceeding its fundraising goal! We are extremely grateful to Boston University team’s commitment year after year for the ride! Thank you to our industry sponsors and riders: AlphaNet, CSL Behring, Grifols and Takeda.
In the past twenty-six years, Team Alpha-1 has recruited close to 5,000 riders and volunteers from all over the United States. We have lost many Alphas along the way but preserve their spirit with the Alpha Angels patches that each rider wears in an Alphas memory.
During the pandemic, the community came together to add a new element to Escape to the Cape, Riding for a Reason. This allows everyone across the United States to participate in this highly anticipated event. Alpha friends and family virtually rode 160 miles (or as many as they could) during the month of September to help raise funds for Alpha-1 research. Riding for a Reason has brought together virtually on their bikes, foot peddles, e-bikes and Peloton! Participants stayed connected over the entire month of September using the hashtag #Alpha1RidingforaReason on social media. Weekly Zoom calls kept everyone engaged in their goals both of miles and fundraising. Thank you to all the riders for their dedication and commitment! We are so proud of you.
We look forward to an amazing weekend bringing together old and new riders, Alphas, researchers, physicians and industry partners. For more information or to donate, click here.
