Honoring Pulmonary Awareness Week: Benefits for Alpha-1 Patients

This week marks Pulmonary Rehabilitation Awareness Week, a time to highlight beneficial programs and resources that help people with lung conditions breathe easier and live longer and stronger.

For Debbi Webb-Howells, Alpha-1 patient and Virginia Alpha-1 Connection Support Group Co-Leader, pulmonary rehabilitation has been nothing short of life-changing.

Diagnosed in 2007 and living with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1), Debbi struggled with stamina and shortness of breath. In 2017, her pulmonologist recommended pulmonary rehab, but work demands forced her to put it on hold. After retiring in 2023, she made it a priority and hasn’t looked back since.

Twice a week, Debbi walks into her local hospital’s rehab facility, where treadmills, recumbent bikes, weights, and pulleys are all part of the routine. But for her, pulmonary rehab is about more than exercise.

“The difference is incredible,” Debbi shares. “My stamina is better, my breathing has improved, and I’ve picked up techniques from my respiratory therapist that help me every day. Oh, and I’ve lost some weight too!”

Beyond fitness, pulmonary rehab gives her confidence. The reassurance of having a respiratory therapist monitoring her heart rate, oxygen levels, and progress on a weekly basis provides a sense of security that a regular gym simply can’t match.

Her advice to fellow Alphas:

“Don’t wait; just do it. Pulmonary rehab makes a real difference.”

As we recognize Pulmonary Rehabilitation Awareness Week, Debbi’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, taking control of your health happens one breath at a time.
