Ice Cream for Alpha-1: Omaha Event Raises Awareness About Genetic Condition

OMAHA, Neb. —
Big Red Alphas gave out ice cream and information on Saturday in an attempt to raise funds and awareness about a genetic condition.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a condition that affects the lungs and the liver. It affects about 100,000 people in the country and right now there is no cure.

Organizers of the second annual Ice Cream for Alpha-1 said the condition is widely misdiagnosed.

“The research that the Alpha-1 Foundation is doing is really amazing. And they didn’t use to talk about a cure when I first learned about it seven years ago, but now a cure is on the horizon. And so, these kinds of fundraising events are really crucial to that goal,” said Nora Kemmerer.

The Alpha-1 Foundation said there are treatments for people to help manage symptoms.
