November Is Alpha-1 Awareness Month: The Future of Alpha-1 Is You

The Alpha-1 Foundation (A1F) is proud to recognize November as Alpha-1 Awareness Month, a 30-day initiative that encourages the Alpha-1 community to share stories and resources, raise awareness, support research, and help advance the search for a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1).

Every breakthrough begins with someone taking action. During Alpha-1 Awareness Month, A1F is celebrating the people making a difference through this year’s theme, “The Future of Alpha-1 Is You.” Individuals who participate in research, raise funds, advocate for better care, educate their communities, support loved ones, and help advance A1F’s mission are helping shape the future of Alpha-1. Together, we’re building a future with earlier diagnoses, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure.

“Alpha-1 Awareness Month is a distinct time each year to bring the entire community together. At the Alpha-1 Foundation, we pride ourselves on raising awareness every day. Our continued efforts help ensure that no Alpha is missed, no patient has to navigate Alpha-1 alone, and every Alpha has an informed path to care. We are building the bridge from discovery to treatment while ensuring the Alpha-1 community has access to the resources and influence needed to help shape the future,” said Scott Santarella, A1F President & CEO.

Throughout November, A1F will share educational resources, community stories, research opportunities, advocacy initiatives, and awareness activities designed to increase understanding of Alpha-1 and its impact on individuals and families. The month will also highlight the importance of testing, detection, informed care, and research participation, all critical components of improving outcomes for people affected by Alpha-1.

There are many ways to get involved during Alpha-1 Awareness Month, including learning more about Alpha-1 and sharing information with family and friends, encouraging testing and family testing, joining the Alpha-1 Research Registry, participating in advocacy efforts, downloading resources from A1F’s awareness toolkits, and supporting research through the annual A1F Virtual Walk. The A1F Virtual Walk encourages Alphas, families, friends, and supporters to walk anywhere, anytime during November while raising awareness and funds for Alpha-1 research and related programs. Every step helps support A1F’s mission to find a cure for Alpha-1.

Throughout the month, supporters are encouraged to share awareness messages, educational resources, and personal stories using #Alpha1Awareness. Every conversation helps expand understanding of Alpha-1, encourages detection, and increases visibility of the need for continued research and improved care.
